Havelock commissioners and
staff are continuing to move forward with efforts to clean up the old
Phoenix Recycling site near Tucker Creek. Commissioners voted to apply for a Brownfield Agreement from the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources. If accepted, the agreement would work
in collaboration with a $400,000 federal Environmental Protection
Agency Brownfield Community Assessment Grant the city received notice
of in May. The assessment grant covers all of
the potential hazardous sites in and around Havelock, but chief among
them is the Phoenix site, located behind the West End Fire Station and
just outside the city limits.
